Mechanical Designer

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mechanical Designer to join our Tucson office to work on the Rosemont project, which is a large copper development project, located in Pima County, Arizona, approximately 30 miles southeast of Tucson.

[Company] has been working with Hudbay Minerals on the Rosemont Project since 2015; through value engineering and detailed feasibility study phases, proceeding to full EPCM development of the processing facilities, site infrastructure and tailings facilities. Project duration is expected to last from Q2 2019 to Q2 2022.

Rosemont will be the third-largest copper mine in the United States, accounting for 10% of domestic annual copper production, and has an expected 19-year mine life. The Project has recently completed a 10-year permitting process and will be one of the most environmentally sensitive and advanced operations ever permitted in the United States, including the largest dry stack tailings facility of its kind in the world. The processing plant will produce copper and molybdenum concentrates by a process that includes; crushing, grinding, flotation, concentrate handling, and filtration and dry-stacking of the tailing's residue.

Key Responsibilities of the Role:

  • Prepare mechanical layout detail designs and drawings in line with project design requirements for various areas from the following list:

o Crushing and reclaim, including conveyor set out and detailing

o Grinding circuit, including platework detailing

o Flotation and regrind, including the associated reagents and air services

o Concentrate filtration and handling

o Tails thickening

o Tails filtration and dry stack conveying

  • Work in SmartPlant model environment
  • Deliver design drafting according to project design requirements as well as the defined regulations, codes, and standards.
  • Maintain consistent design drafting standards across project areas by communicating expectations and holding project members to account for standards. '
  • Facilitate and ensure interdisciplinary co-ordination when developing the model
  • Comply with all [Company] Quality Assurance and corporate policies and procedures


  • Mechanical Engineering Technician's diploma or equivalent, with at least 5 years' work experience in the U.S.
  • 10+ years' experience in the layout of mineral processing plants in a multidisciplinary EPC/EPCM environment, with at least 5 years' experience in copper concentrator design.
  • Working knowledge of SmartPlant required.
  • Able to use vendor data, drawings and information to develop and verify the model.
  • Understanding of industry regulatory codes and standards
  • Well-developed written and oral skills
  • Able to work well, within, or leading, a small team
